Built in 1831...LITTLETOWN came into being as a pit village following the opening of its colliery in 1831 alongside neighbouring colliery villages High Pittington and Sherburn Hill. All the old colliery terraces have gone. Plantation Avenue, which now houses most of Littletown’s population is a street of mid-20th century semi-detached houses built on the site of the former colliery terrace that was called Long Row in the 1850s and later referred to as Long Street.
